We Stay/Nos Quedamos and the Environmental Justice Youth Team (EJYT), present a day-long event in honor of the global 2023 International Youth Day (IYD) celebrations recognizing how young people lead as agents of change in environmental. IYD, first observed in 2000 by the United Nations, draws attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The 2023 theme: “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World.” (#YouthLead)
The event’s cultural celebration will include young performing artists, including poets, dancers, singers, activists, as well as field games for youth and their families. Download Flyer
The day will also include a special announcement on Nos Quedamos’ recent grant allocation and recognition by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) about our environmental resilience work in the South Bronx, with NOAA Assistant Secretary Jainey K. Bavishi in attendance acknowledging the milestone as a presenter.
2023 Youth Day Presenters Include:
ESPADA DE LA LUZ is a Bronx born Nuyorican artist, passionate about their craft in music production, and film making. Espada has had the privilege of being a performer since they were a child, acting along side their mother, renown Nuyorican poet Caridad De La Luz.
E’LEE
Elee James is a young artist (singer, spoken word) from Queens who enjoys writing & healing. As her journey to self love continues, she hopes to transform the world with the power of healing through mediums of art.
NOS QUEDAMOS’ ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE YOUTH TEAM is a leadership development program which teaches the youth about community organizing. What does it mean, what are some examples, and then putting it into practice. The way they put it into practice is by using the existing space of a rooftop garden where community led conversations can take place to address issues such as green space access, food insecurity, and air quality while promoting the priority of health and wellness.
SYEP ’23 TEAM
Nos Quedamos’ Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) Team is part of the nation’s largest youth employment program, that connects NYC youth between the ages of 14 and 24 with career exploration opportunities and paid work experiences each summer.
NQ’s SYEP Team participates in actual community-based structured projects and work-based opportunities. Working closely with seasoned staff members, participants gain direct hands-on knowledge about such critical issues as environmental resiliency and community lands trusts (clts), and as a result, become better prepared for careers of the future in these sectors.
COBRA MARCHING BAND
The Marching Cobras of Cobra Performing Arts, has taken New York and its neighboring states by storm. The programs provide opportunities that will promote leadership, teamwork, as well as physical fitness with a strong focus on character development.
DABRAND MARCHING GROUP
DA brand is a dance group that was founded in 2014 by mother daughter duo Michelle Pinto and Chanell Arroyo in the Bronx,Ny. Da Brand started out as a side job for mother Michelle Pinto, wanting to create a dance environment her daughter Chanell Arroyo can be in full control of. Chanell has been dancing since she was 3 and now in her early twenties she’s using her passion for dance as an outlet to bring the youth together and do something progressive. “B.R.A.N.D” stands for Born, Raised, As, Natural, Dancers and stays in the back of their mind every time they hit the dance floor. Da brand makes sure that they’re not only fully expressing themselves, but using their talent to inspire their community as well.
